Recently, Vermont became the fifth state in the nation to pass a paid sick leave law for most employees. 1:  When do employers have to start complying with this law?  Are there any exceptions for small businesses? Employers with more than five employees who work on average 30 or more hours per week must start providing earned sick time on January 1, 2017.  Employers with five or fewer employees who are employed for an average of 30 or more hours per week, must start providing earned sick time on January 1, 2018.
